What are the possible complications from a root canal?
Despite the best efforts of your dentist to clean, seal and treat your tooth, new infections can develop after a root canal. While uncommon, the likely causes for this include:
- More root canals than normally anticipated (leaving one of them untreated)
- An undetected crack in the root of a tooth
- A inadequate dental restoration that has allowed bacteria to get past the restoration and into the tooth causing recontamination of the area
- Decomposition of the sealing material over time allowing bacteria to re-contaminate the tooth
Occasionally re-treatment can be successful, other times endodontic surgery may be required in order to save the tooth.
